I'm mistaken about Luko's procedures (I know he's always right) - since he's starting from 16-bit, proc. 1 degrades the image twice, and proc.2 only once, so there is a difference. If you begin with 8-bit, it's worth converting to 16 only for a more-than-one step process.

Philip, agreed - it does depend on what you shoot, but even when I'm out shooting wild birds I've still never filled a 1Gb card. Then again my brother often accuses me of not shooting enough ;)

Greg: OK, I'll agree with the multiple steps point.

On the subject of HGST and new HD technology, no thanks I've lost enough data to those guys already ;)

Since this thread seems to be active with people who are well versed in using the RAW format, may I add a question?

I've just started trying to do some work with Raw files from a Nikon D70 (.NEF). I can view these in the viewfinder but when I go to open them in Photoshop CS using the prescribed method (choosing Open - > Camera Raw), I get a message "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document"

Screwed up install of PS, or screwed up operator?
