Great emka 2020-01-15 18:47

Hello Gert, I have heard about Şanlıurfa but I haven't been to this part of Turkey. Even in 1971 it looks inhabited by many people. But here the houses are low, probably now they are much higher. Nice inclusion of these two men. I never ask the people if I can take a photo of them. They do not pose for the photos (or very rarely), as you sometimes suppose, they just quickly return the smile. But quite often I am invisible.

We also had some changes in the town names. For a short time, Katowice were called Stalinogród.
Kind regards MAlgo

Default To emka: ask permission

Thank you Malgo,
I sometimes feel I have to ask permission if it's impossible to take a photo discreetly. Occasionally, especially in Turkey in the 70's, people would agree but pose stiffly like soldiers at attention. They would look ridiculous. It is not always, as you think, that they will only return a quick smile. It seems we have very different experiences of taking photos in the streets. I am also usually invisible, but not always, and occasionally my polite request has been angrily turned down. Then there is nothing to do. And women in conservative Muslim countries will most often not want to be photographed by foreign men, believe me.
