The Cape-Verdeans living in the USA (more people than those in the islands) celebrate two Independence Days in a row: the United States 4th of July and the Cape Verde's 5 de Julho.
After five centuries ruled by Portugal, Cape Verde became an independent nation on the 5 th of July, 1975. The poorest of the Portuguese colonies, it had a challanging begining, but, against all odds, the country succeed, beneficing from the government's wise management of the resources and foreign aid. It is now among the few success stories of the African independences of the 60's and 70's. Cape Verde ranks now among the medium developed nations.
Just two examples of saving money in the difficult years following independence: the first Cape-Verdean embassy in Lisbon was a humble room in a low rate hotel; the visitors used to sit on the only chair of the room, while the ambassador sit on the bed. Other example is that the Independence Day used to be celebrated only once in each 5-year period.
Here's a song written by Alcides Spencer Brito that celebrates Cinco de Julho, Independence Day. My free translation:
Labanta braço
Raise your hand
Bo grita bô liberdadi
Cry out your freedom
Grita povo independenti
Cry out independent people
Grita povo libertado
Cry liberated people
Cinco di Julho é sinónimo di liberdadi
Fifth of July means freedom
Cinco di Julho caminho aberto pa flicidadi
Fifth of July is a open way to happiness
Grita "viva Cabral"
Cry out "long life Cabral"*
Honra combatenti di nôs terra
Honor the freedom fighters of our country

* - Amílcar Cabral, assassinated before independence, he was the father of the nation. He could be as famous as Nelson Mandela.

This picture is last year's 5 de Julho eve, in Mindelo, São Vicente Island. The municipal government offered a free show, with artists from São Vicente and Santo Antão, in front of the palace and along the Rua de Lisboa.

Lá atrás, o Palácio do Governo, o palco na rotunda, som e cor, muita "ligria" e música até dizer chega. Olhar para esta foto é como ter estado lá.
Abraço
Djack

Dear Santos,
Your intelligent light management:
The distant objects (The music players) are illuminated by the stage light there and the fore-ground spectators are taken care by your camera flash.

The bald heads stand out so much in such snaps that one has to be careful to choose a row without bald in that.
Once I had a mirror like reflecting flash light from bald glaring the picture.

Your informative note is commendable.
Best wishes.
Dr. J.

All the best Francisco for you and your beautiful country.
A sample for all those 'not so fortunate' (what an axiom!!), countries of how to manage themselves and how to succeed in the end.
Quite honesty…It's not that difficult…
Just use your brains - guys out there!!
And do NOT BLAME anyone in the world !!!
Just blame yourself and you'll see how easy it is to get out of trouble…
The motto:
I screwed up, therefore I'm the one who will fix it !!!

Thanks for your visits on my site…
I feel privileged and honored, dear pal.

Have a great, celebrating weekend
.

Ola Francsico,
I like the photo a lot with the performers seen over the watchers. As much as I like the photo, I like the note even better!! What a wonderful, heart-warming success story. SAA, Pat

Ricardo
