In southern Ethiopia's Great Rift Valley you can find two marvellous lakes ringed by savanna plains and nice mountain crests. One of them is called Abaya and has reddish brown water with muddy beaches, the other is the Chamo Lake and has blue water with white sandy beaches. They are considered by many to be also the most beautiful. Indeed, few places on earth can match the allure of their setting.
The two lakes are divided only by a narrow strip of land very well visible from the town of Arba Minch from where you can enjoy fantastic panoramic views on the two lakes and the surrounding Amaro mountains which forms part of one of Ethiopia's finest national parks, Nechisar, established as a sanctuary for the rare Swayne's hartebeest.
Chamo is a sanctuary for several thousand Nile crocodile, some reaching lengths of up to seven metres and for hundreds of hippos. Also the birdlife is flourishing but this will be the story for another photo...
In such a circumstances it was very "funny" to have to wear the life-guard jacket throughout the boat trip considering that the waters are infected also by the bilharzia.
