Photographer's Note

The giant water lily (Victoria amazonica) is a native of the Amazon. It was named, as many things were, after Queen Victoria. It's leaves can reach 3 m in diameter. This one is found at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Cardens of Mauritius. A green-backed heron (Butorides striatus) is using it as a float. About 50 or 60 of these lilies are growing in a long rectangular pond along a path appropriately named Charles Darwin Lane. It's a splendid botanical garden and one of the oldest in the world. Definitely worth a detour!
