Photographer’s Note

Islamic motifs are mainly geometric and mathematical. In Arabic countries a distinctive decorative style called zillij uses purpose-made ceramic shapes that are further worked by hand to allow them to fit together perfectly to cover a surface.
The practice of zillij dates back to the 11th century. The lines of Moroccan geometry are straight as opposed to the curved lines used in Middle Eastern art traditions.
