065 / A courtyard inside Amer Fort

Considered an exponent of the Rajput style of architecture, the fort-palace of Amer is one of the most visited sights in Rajasthan. Built in 1592, it straddles a low hill on the outskirts of Jaipur, and consists of a maze of halls, corridors, apartments, and courtyards. Much of Amer is coated in rich yellow, topped off by a luminous lime plaster. At midday, when the crowds are thin and the sun is high, the whole place seems to be bathed in ethereal glow. It seems almost fitting that the British chose to incorrectly spell the place as Amber.
