Batuan painting by Ida Bagus Made Jatasura (1917-1946) at Museum Puri Lukisan

The Batuan school of painting is practiced by artists in the village of Batuan, which is situated ten kilometers to the South of Ubud. Painters from the village have been known since the 1930s for their dense, immensely detailed paintings of Balinese ceremonies, bali dancer painting, daily life, and increasingly, “modern” Bali.
Batuan paintings are remarkably dense, with deeply saturated tones. The images are often dark but they are always carefully made and finely balanced. The forms in the paintings swirl and intertwine; repeat and expand outwards, transforming into new shapes and new patterns. The paintings are characterized by high level of energy in both form and content. Each painting is made up of countless individual shapes; it is almost as if each shape could be lifted out of the painting like a single piece of a jigsaw puzzle.

Most Batuan paintings contain thousands of these forms, either working together or in opposition, to create complex fields of pulsating energy. This
is what gives them their unique visual sparkle.
