Photographer's Note

While in Bali we watched a cremation ceremony in a village near Ubud. While we thought that it might have been a tourist affair, in fact it was the funeral ceremony for two village chiefs, and while there were several tourists in attendance, it was a real affair. The peole's importance can be assesed by the use of the bull sculpture to cover the coffin, as the bull is considered a poweful animal.

I had a very hard time taking photos of the event, as it began at high noon under a very harsh sun with very difficult light conditions and the procession was very disperse with too many people all over the place but not so very easy to take a photo of something specific. Only at the end when the actual burning was taken place under the shadow of some trees was I able to get some satisfactory photos.
