The great Buddhist relic of Borobudur is about 40 Km outside Yogyakarta. It was built around a small hill about1200 years ago but abandoned to the jungle soon after. It was only "re-discovered" early in the 19th century and restored in the late 20th century.
The scale is massive with the people in the photo helping to give an idea of its size. There are 6 square terraces with another 3 round ones on top. The top levels are covered with latticed stupas, each with a Buddha inside. Every level is covered by carvings with more Buddhas everywhere.
Borobudur is one of the most memorable places that I've ever visited.
The photo was scanned from a negative and needed a bit of cleaning up (noise, and the sky). |
