Photographer's Note

Early August 1996. We had just seen on TV a typhoon hit Manila the day before, and another was reported on the way from the Pacific… Warnings against taking ferries were issued. Not many people on the beach that afternoon. Clouds were piling up as wind was increasing; twilight was a couple of hours early that day...

This is White Beach, Moalboal. In the background we can see the profile of Negros… the black island. The northern and western parts of Negros are largely plains and gently rolling hills, while the East coast we see here is mountainous. Mt Kanlaon (though not visible here) is an active volcano and the highest elevation in the Visayas with its 2435 meters.

Moalboal is a town on the Southwest coast of Cebu, approximately 90 km from Cebu City. The trip from Cebu City is interesting, since it takes you through typical Filipino towns and villages… costal areas as well as over the highlands of Cebu providing stunning views of the Visayan Sea.
