I just thought to post this oldie - a photo which was scanned from a slide of God-only-knows what photo brand! It's not even Fomachrom... it's even worse :) And don't ask me what camera I used! It was a very simple Soviet (Russian) camera with no zoom, no good lens... that was all I had at that time and I was happy to have even that.

Anyway... this photo was taken in 1983, in July, during my very first visit to St. Petersburg (Leningrad at that time).

I was a seniour secondary school student then. The city impressed me so much that I wanted to return there again and again.

Perhaps it was just one step closer to Stockholm as these two cities have something in common: both of them are beautiful and both of them stand on water. Well, that's where all the "commonness" is over, anyway :)

I'd love to visit St. petersburg again some time in the future as this is the city of my childhood which so much looks like a very beautiful dream. In any weather.

I apologize for the bad quality of the photo. I don't know why the original was in such a "not too good" condition"!:((

But I did my best to remove the noise and adjust the levels after scanning. Also sharpened the image.

That's a photo that conveys the mood, I suppose. That's the view I would recomment to be the first (or one of the first) to see when you come to St. Petersburg.

==============================================
These are Rostral Columns (actually, one of them) which are significant examples of Greek Revival architecture.

The doric columns sit on a granite plinth and are constructed of brick coated with a deep terra cotta red stucco and decorated with bronze anchors and four pairs of bronze ship prows (rostra), each representing the major rivers of Russia — the Volga, Dnieper, Neva, and Volkhov.

Seated marble figures decorates the base of each column.
They were originally intended to serve as beacons and originally were topped by a light in the form of a Greek brazier and lit by oil.

The braziers have been removed and the tops of the columns refitted with gas torches that continue to be lit on ceremonial occasions.

In the background you see The Peter and Paul Fortress which is the original citadel of St. Petersburg, founded by Peter the Great in 1703 and built to Domenico Trezzini's designs from 1706 to 1740.

Hi eelena, sure looks extremely old. i hope its not from the time when the city was being built!!!! But I like the old world charm and the relaxed pre-etchnology era mood that it encapsulates

Hej Elena,
Why is it so unsharp?
Was it soooo hot that air was shaking?
The emotional meaning is clear, interesting job, Elena.
Anna

Hello Elena,
This is a very obvious scan, but as you have yourself told me many times: the lack of technical perfectness is not important, it's the picture and what it conveys that matters. Already 25 years ago you managed to give a feeling of movement to your pictures, and you knew how to create a good composition. There's a strong diagonal line going across the photo, from the corner of the house through the pillar and the church-towers. I understand this must be rather nostalgic to you.
Best regards,
Gert

Howdy Elena!
Very interesting perspective, interesting composition. Good capture.
Regards!

Hi Elena,
Very interesting in spite of all the technical "weaknesses". I am not at all disturbed by these. The good colours and composition compensate most of that. Even all the cables for the buses contribute with their star-shaped pattern!
Regards
Gunnar

dear Elena,
an impressive view of "Leningrad".
perhaps your impression of that time is far beyond my imagination.
buildings, cars, roads, people, wires, and "sky and air" are just there at that time.
a nice record of the old life and your delicate feeling, really I think so.
(technical problems are not significant)
thank you,
Akihisa

Hello Elena,
like a painting..!

Interesting compositon, but as you mention the picture has a rather old fashioned style after the scan, because of the obvious lack of details. Hard to cope with that.
On the other side, it give the impression of some kind of water color, which is not bad from an esthetical point of view...

All the besst,

Emmanuel

Ohh, The Andropov's time! Very interesting archive photo. Ikarus, Volga and LAZ are moody symbols of Soviet epoque. Thanks for sharing!
Greetings from Holy Land,
Serghei

Hello Elena
I have just discovered this scan in your gallery and it has a special quality - like a painting. The noise filter 'dust and scratches' in photoshop will give a similar effect. However you have achieved this effect without trying and I am sure you were disappointed at the time. As for the content - it is well composed and I like all the criss-crossing of cables. Your notes on the Rostral Columns are informative and the scene does bring back memories for me. I have walked in this area as St. Petersburg and probably as Leningrad. TFS, Marlene
