Photographer's Note

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, Thailand. Taken with my old Canon T90. I was struck initially by all the human activity on the canals (klongs) and thereabouts, and took quite a few images of that (more later maybe), but this photograph is all about patterns, shapes, colours and textures. I don't know if the lack of human interest is a problem: perhaps a set of images of the place would rectify the balance and do it more justice.

Damnoen Saduak, I was there more then 10 years before you were there, but nowadays this floating market is for tourists only. It is a pity, but there are other floating markets which still kept their charm.

Photographically you have selected an excellent POV which boost DOF as well. Great vibrant colour hues with high sharpness. Well done.

You asked if I would ask for permission to take pictures of people. No I do not most of the time, but I smile if necessary before taking the shot or at least after it. In Asia people generally do not object to be photographed, but there are exception, in particular for religious reasons. However some may ask for money, but I never pay nor will I give any gift. Because both are not custom in this part of the world.

You took a great perspective and a really beautiful motif. Though I think it is a little unsharp, though exposition time of 1/120 seconds shoul be short enough....may be you used a telezoom? But still a good picture and a beautiful motif! Well done!

Hello Will,

This is a genuinely eye catching photo of the colorful Thai hats. The composition, featuring the patterns and colors is well conceived and flawlessly executed. Two years ago I traveled to Thailand to give a talk in Phuket in the South. Thailand is exotic, colorful and well worth visiting. It's remarkable that almost 800 visitors have viewed this image, and I am only the seventh to fully appreciate it.

I appreciate the note regarding the last photo I posted from New England — "subdued colors, shaft of light..." Coming from someone who has taught photography for a decade, it is especially useful. (I am a scientist-artist-author, but not a professional photographer. Your suggestion to crop out the tarmac was excellent. (Only when I actually removed it did I realize how much the excision improved the composition.)
