This picture was taken at a special ceremony to commemorate the dead of the tsunami in a Chinese Mahayana temple in China Town. Five young monks prepare themselves to participate and, through an elaborate ceremony they impersonate the five mythical Buddhas of history. In fact, for the duration of the ceremony, they become living Buddha images. On this occasion they entered a state of deep meditation and sat motionless during the five or more hours of the ceremony. I could not see even an eye blinking. This monk represent the Maitraia, the mythical future Buddha. Interestingly, he is similar to the Tibetan image of the Maitreya Buddha shown by bibiweb in http:www.trekearth.com/gallery/Asia/India/photo247730.htm/

As this monk was a living icon, I pictured him is a strictly iconographic way.
And , to be honest, during the ceremony and chanting, he became, for me at least, no longer the son of a rice farmer but the living embodyment of the eternal Buddhahood.

Hi Kev,

A very interesting shot full of colour, but a bit blurred. Well done though. TFS.
Ged.

Hi Kevin,
my favorite monk is here again, no I see, it's another, but also with this "crown" which I like so much. I would like so much to see such a ceremony with my own eyes, but it's not possible, so thanks for the photos.
Gratulations, you have 1111 points, cheers, now I destroy it and give 2 more for this impressive shot, bye

Hello Kevin,
First of all, congratulations for your 100th post (you didn't notice, but I did!) ;o)
Looking forward to discovering your next 100 photos...
Secondly, thanks for posting this portrait of the living icon in complement to my post of the Maitreya Buddha!
The colors of your picture are remarkbly vivd and I like the details like his shiny forehead. It lacks a bit of sharpness but that doesn't bother me too much.
Have a nice Sunday.

He is beautiful with his closed eyes... The blur creates a strong mood.
Beautiful colors.
Stéphane
