Photographer's Note

I entered my time machine, pressed the black and white button marked "Magical Mystery Tour" – and to my great surprise I was taken to Brussels in 1966!

This is the second oldest photo I have posted here, surpassed only by a photo from England in 1964. If you don't like the composition, please consider it was taken by a teenager with very little photo experience, probably one of the youngest members of TE.

This time I had spent a few weeks in England on my first foreign journey on my own. Having arrived there by boat I decided to return home by train. My first stop after leaving London was Brussels. I had a very simple camera and I only took a very limited number of B&W photos. During a day and a half in Brussels I probably took about a dozen pictures.

This is from the famous Grand Place, which of course was the first place I wanted to see. The buildings looked the same then as now, but possibly there has been some restoration work during the past half century. The main difference seems to be that the cars that blocked the views in 1966 have moved out, and cafés moved in.

Here is a larger version.

Look at this photo by Christiane (Cricri), taken in 2017, for a comparison.

Looking back 53 years, I actually find the cars and people more interesting to watch than the well known buildings.

Another view from Grand Place can be seen in a workshop (recommended for lovers of vintage cars). Another workshop shows a view from above of a wide street.

These photos were scanned from Kodak Plus-X negatives.

By the way, this adds a new country to my TE map... ;-)

Song title reference: The Beatles. But their "Magical Mystery Tour" only brought them to 1967. Ha!
