Photographer's Note

In ancient times most of the population of this oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe lived atop a fortified hill. These are some of the ruins of the fortifications of the old citadel. Taken late afternoon. I would have stayed for sunset but the deep ruts in the cobblestone streets of the old town and slippery gravel overlay made walking downhill at night an unclever choice. I twisted my ankle in Croatia and wanted no repeats.
