High above the Thracian Plane, on the noprthern slopes of the Rhodopi mountains, not far from the town of Asenovgrad lies the old fortification of an ancient Bulgarian Empire, the Asen Krepost.
From the 9th until the 13th century there were several Bulgarian empires of wich the one of Asen Krepost was one of the mightiest. In that area the big Bulgarian monasteries of Backovo and Rila were grounded.
It was an enormous complex with castles and churches, of wich partes are very good conservated and restaurated. The main building is this romanic church from the 11th century, built high in the mountains. You can reach it by taking a left from the main road leadin from the Backovo monastery to Asenovgrad, just 3 km before Asenovgrad, and climb steep for about 3 km.

Hi Gerrit
Beautifull architecture , but the most impressive is the Point of View. Excellent composition with nice colors.

Hi Gerrit,
Nice POV, interesting monastery ... but not enough sharpness, pity !

Hi.
Great POV for an interesting composition and a very nice byzantine monastery. The light and colors are not optimum (due to scan ?), but the contribution is still very interesting. Thanks for sharing !

You work hard to take this shot. I like your angle and the greens at these place. The church building however very old but look like it may be restored.

Hi Gerrit - the monestary looks very remote with no roads leading to it, the stone construction mixes well with its rocky surroundings

Ciao Gerrit!
Great POV for this image.
Great architecture and surroundings. It worth the step climb!
Bravo!
Luca

Gerrit, this is a great perspective looking down on this church. It shows the detail of the roof well, a view we don't often see. The picture is a bit grainy though - maybe a low res scan?

Hi Gerrit! Great angle and crop, with rich and true colours. Well done! Thanks and best regards, Chris.

It just needs a bit more sharpness, but the point of view is great and the composition, too. Nice note. Regards, Yvonne
