Greenland, the world's largest island, dominated by vast frozen wastes, is surprisingly green in the south. The region's mild climate is provided by an offshoot of the Gulf Stream which brings warm water there. During the arctic summer, meadows and mountainsides burst into bloom. Actually when I was there in July, during a sunny day, the temperature reached to 20˙C, and there were also a lot of aggressive mosquitos.
Narsaq is located at the heart of a magnificent fjord system, with high mountains and green valleys. The name Narsaq is Greenlandic for "plain", referring to the beautiful plain the town lies on.
The district has a total population of over 2,100, with roughly 1,700 living in the town itself, and the remainder in the many surrounding sheep farms, which today is an important economic activity.
It is believed that people have lived in the area for thousands of years, but not continuously. The sea around Narsaq is full of marine life, including whales, salmon, and seals.
The town's grow started from 1953, when the first fishing factory was built and the city's emblem, a cod fish, points to the historic importance of this catch for the town's economy.
Today Narsaq is a modern arctic, town with every kind of facilities and servicies.
The shot was taken in the early morning from the window of my accomodation. I liked the contrast of the enlightened colourful houses with the foggy, grey sea spotted with a lot of white floating icebergs.
