Photographer's Note

King Ludwig II of Bavaria could be compared to Pierre de Courbertin, both were not understood by their fellowmen. Both also left their print in the history of the world more than many great men of that time.
The parts which now form Germany are countries of mythology and castels (most of the work of Wagner is based on the german mythology). Ludwig II endeavoured to build castels worthy of fairy tales. Was it a mean for him to escape the real world ? We might never know. Wagner did spend some time with the king. The wall paintings of the rooms tell german myths.

He had to resign only three years after finishing this castel (he was declared insane, had to resign the same day and was found drawned with his psychatrist the next day in shallow water) and his other projects remained only at the stage of architect paintings.
NeuSchwanstein (whose construction lasted 17 years) is the most famous of the two castels near Fuessen (on the border of the austrian alps). This castel is very small (maybe 15m only from one side to the other) and is in the state it was when the king died (the second floor was not finished, is still not finished and cannot be visited).
The following site here will provide you with more information on Ludwig II and the castle than I can relate here.

The price of the entry is about 15€ per person for a short guided tour. This castel is therefore one of the most valuable place in Bavaria (what would it have been if the king had gone through his project of building 4 castels).

Hint if you go there : there is a great view for a shot on the balcony of the third floor (next to the bar) but the people there very unpleasantly refused to let me take a picture or even to take one for me. If this happens to you, don't worry, there is a possibility to make the same picture (almost) from the mens bathroom on the lower floor (when exiting the visit).
