Here's the larger TE Beta Version, clearer/sharper.
Shooting scenes like this one really gets my creative mind working overtime, and i love it. The reason why I went black and white with this one is to put the emphasis on the shadows on the ground. In colour, the shadows are almost invisible.
Before arriving in Athens, i planned on visiting the abandoned Olympic Park. I'm so glad I did. Such a sad state of affairs when you hold the Olympic Games in the summer of 2004, and within only a few years the site is left abandoned and left to rust and rot in the hot sun.
This portion you see here is a long long long snake like tunnel that meanders outside on the Olympic Grounds. Its quite beautiful, especially in its white colour, and the blue sky. Just right out front of the main buildings and sporting complex. I read that this was the area where they would have had large screens set up, viewing platforms, viewing parties, people would just hang outside if they didn't have tickets and enjoy the atmosphere.
If you go there today, the buildings are falling apart, its mostly gated and boarded up. I do believe the outdoor swimming pool is still in use, but thats it, nothing else.
For this photo, i really wanted to get a person inside the tunnel, but trust me....NOBODY was there!
There were the odd sporadic jogger passing by, and I was hoping they'd jog right into the tunnel but people seemed to want to avoid it. I waited and waited until I couldn't wait anymore. Oh well, what can you do right?

Hello Craig ,
Calatrava work , no doubt !
Similar to the Ciudad de la Artes y las Ciencas en Valencia .
The B&W works well here , even this is beautiful in the blue sky .
holmertz (59764) 2017-04-17 6:45
Didn't you know that it is considered bad luck to enter this tunnel? ;-]
I guess it would have been nice to have someone jogging towards you, but honestly this place has so much to offer in terms of rounded shapes, odd lines and shadows that even I – really – think it does well without people. The exposure is great and the tones of B&W are amazing.

The abandonment is no doubt the result of the very severe economic crisis they have had in Greece and which is still ongoing. Steeped in debt they just don't have any money to maintain these structures. Enough of that! You have captured an amazing perspective here and black and white was exactly the right choice to present it. Superb realisation.

first class B&W photography, would have been much less with colours. And a sad story. When I remember the situation of the 1972 olympic parc in Munich: that site is in permanent use, so where and how did the Greek fail?
A Happy Easter to you and all of your family!

Bonjour, cher Craig,
L'effet sur le lecteur est fantastique et l'ensemble est résolument moderne. J'aime beaucoup cette sensation de profondeur.
Le choix du noir et blanc est parfait pour cette réalisation.
Bonnes fêtes pascales.

Hello Craig ,
It still looks fantastic either way either with or without people and it was a very good decision to execute plan b. It's either a flood (with multiple tour groups carrying flags) or a drought, where people are concerned, as depicted here. Amazing graphics and formidable sharpness. Tfs!
ikeharel (79281) 2017-04-17 8:23
Fantastic effect, Craig, B&W format perfectly works here.
Photo immaculately done, with the sharpness and the graphic's.
Have a nice new week,
jemaflor (103729) 2017-04-17 8:41
Nice modern architecture with all these curves, good contrast in b&w and also with these shadows on the floor, good depth effect too, tfs.
Fis2 (107560) 2017-04-17 8:44

The black and white was the right choice.

No wonder this place grabbed your attention. And going BW was obviously a good idea, it resulted in a very attractive photo.
janneman (3102) 2017-04-17 10:55
Indeed a beautiful play of light, shadow and lines! The b/w is perfect.

Hi Craig, another great surprise! With or without people inside, with or without drone, your pics and your ideas are always a step ahaed. This is a new wonderful example, one of the things that remains after the Olympic games caught in a very professional and artistic way,2 points are not enough. Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Beautifully graphic. I like the effect of your monochrome conversion, reminding us of the days of red filters on b/w film! Did you use Nik Silver FX, or just Photoshop? You could have got your lady to be the person in the tunnel...

Hello Craig, Typical Calatrava architecture, similar to Valencia. Fortunately, Valencia is full of life, this is abandoned and its fate is decided. It happens quite often that there is much money spend for some occasion- the Expo or Olympic games but there is no idea what to do with it later. It seem the same with the Vpavilion Bridge in Saragossa. It is closed. Splendid view, the shadows are really great.
Kind regrad s Malgo

Nice capture of this metallic structure made in the well known Calatrava's style. Perfect contrasts and sharpness. well done!
Sergiom (89341) 2017-04-18 6:13
On ne s'attend certainement pas à cela en Grèce magnifique aérien et léger dans sa structure et ses formes et dire que tu es seul avec la bête. Magnifique gestion des formes et de la lumière.
CLODO (35956) 2017-04-18 6:34
Good play with the lines enhanced by the sunlight and so giving shadows on te ground, the B&W is perfect for this kind of picture. I would have liked to have a person at the end of the "tube"
rychem (43434) 2017-04-18 8:09
Great, your title says all, fantastic graphical photo, the play of light and shadows is very attractive
sacimar (29049) 2017-04-18 8:22

Wow, what a great view of a fantastic structure. The black & white works fantastically well here of course thanks to the white structure and its many shadows. Very well captured from a good, low POV.
Royaldevon (43979) 2017-04-18 14:17
How could you hold on to this for so long!
It's an absolute beauty!
Maybe a giant spider's web from a science fiction movie!
Like you say, the lines and shadows are amazing and I agree, b&w was the perfect choice.
My warm regards,
carlo62 (55828) 2017-04-18 14:36
worldcitizen (9464) 2017-04-19 16:32
This is great! All of the undulating lines are mesmerizing. I don't mind that there's no people in this shot; the shadows and curves are the stars here. Really nice composition and presentation, too.
kasianowak (10621) 2017-04-19 22:18
I understand the frustration of waiting for someone to enter the frame, it happens to me very often (either no one turns up or a completely wrong person appears and stops in the the middle and spoils the shot completely). But thanks to the lack of people the image looks almost abstract so you produced a great shot anyway, well done on your perseverance! :-)
BennyV (20747) 2017-04-20 12:18
This one is just made for bl/w.
Superb contrast and a great pov.
mkamionka (40163) 2017-04-23 11:41
very original view from Athens. I was not even aware that the olympic park exists there.
Quite an impressive construction and you have made a fantastic use of it here.
The geometry is brilliant and the shadows create extra patterns on the ground as well.
I like it very much!!
