This is planet Earth (3rd stone from the Sun), Greece, Dodecanisos Prefecture, Nisyros island.

This is Stefanos "by night", the largest of the 11 craters of the volcano of Nisyros, with a diameter of 300 m. Relatively "young", only 3.000- 4.000 years old, although some of the other, smaller craters, are much "younger". 3 of them were created between 1860-1880, that means "yesterday".

Photo taken on a lonely night, just after moonrise, in the heart of the crater, an almost metaphysical experience. I spent 2-3 hours, for 2 nights, in this surreal place, trying to take a "diferent" photo of the volcano. I kept smelling sulphur for many days after that. When I met some religious old ladies, the day after, they started making the sign of the cross, because according to a popular superstition, that's the smell of the devil!

Bulb shutter speed, the shutter remained open for 80 seconds.

***HERE , a diferent daily take from a diferent corner of "Stefanos"***

***In ***WORKSHOP, the same photo with "cooler" WB settings. Which one do you prefer?

Hello Cretense,
Un paysage très particulier et un titre qui convient bien.
Très jolies couleurs et un joli coin de lumière à l'arrière plan.Je préfère celle-ci plus colorée
Best regards
Denise

Hello Hercules,
Many thanks for sharing such beautiful landscape with the great displayed of light and shadows!
good pov with sharpness and superb details
well done
greeting
Tony

The quality is superb and it seems as if the onlooker could be right there over feeling and smelling droughtness . You chose the best moment for that picture and also the best POV , shallow but filling 2/3 of the composition with glitterring golden in contrast with the shadows covering grooves and enhancing shapes ...

Night?
80 sec bulb???

I could bet for a polarized noon-light rather than a bulbed moon-light in this one!
Indeed, a spectacular place of volcanic gathering, quite weird, irritating, yet above all, magical!
For the WB, i prefer warm ones (shade or cloudy) 90% of the time. And imho, here it goes very well for the cheating "noon" effect.

Ta leme,
Deniz

yeah!
what a planet, what did ya say the name was ? Herculia, where the sun always sets and never rises. But there's no Herculians in site?
This is a bit of a time travel and a true Underground photography.

Hello Hercules,
A very impressive composition.Light management is superb,
Best regards,

Impressive shot, the exaggeration of the foreground made this place looks alienated and the colors emphasize it more. Great shot and i like your title too.

Hello Hercules
I, personally, do prefer the main post because of the golden tonalities of the crater, and even though it's a small detail there is a green glare, on the other one, which is visible in FG. I like the texture and the star effect of the sun.
Thanks for the note too!
Cheers

Hercules,
no questions regarding which version I like the best. Obviously the main post. The colors are full of tonalities and contrasts. The WS lacks all of this.
I never heard and I never have seen any images of this place. It reminds me somewhat of the weirdness of the Death Valley in California. My first impression was certainly that this is a day shot but then reading your note and looking more carefully I saw the stars in the sky and any doubt was taken.
What are these holes?

Excellent image with amazing use of shadows to emphasize those unusual formations. Good light and I like the sun peeking over the ridge. Well done and TFs. Gerald

Hi Hercules,
Great shot from this fantastic place with amazing lights. The composition is very effective and spectacular, great mood my friend. Congratulations. Have a nice weekend

A unique environment, a unique photo.
You mastered very well the possibility of seeing both the sun setting (or is that the moon rising?) and the holes in the crater. I prefer the original version with warmer colours.
Thanks,
Donato

Hola Hercules.

Geia sou kirie o diabolos!
The impression to be on another planet is real! You made well to stay several hours to make photos. I think that it was difficult to choose " only one"!. But this choice is sensible. I love your two versions, with maybe a small preference for the WS with its more grey and even stranger tints.
I also like the small stars which appear. I think that you spent extraordinary moments over there.
Now, you have to prepare your scissors for hair and especially for nails because the sulfur made to grow it a lot!
You will not be any more a devil but a witch!

Hi Hercules, The timing is very good indeed, the position of the sun assists the colouring of the ground superbly & creates that look of another planet, I have looking at the WS & much prefer this photo, the warmer light highlights better detail & creates a better atmosphere, TFS, kind regards Wilson.

Wow amazing, really seems like a different planet. Very nice POV...
