When you head over to the west coast of Ireland, you are usually in for a treat - certainly image-wise. Except, of course, when your well-earned 4 days off happen to coincide with some of the worst weather anyone has seen in 30 years.
It was dangerous to go into the mountains, unless you were very experienced (or foolish). Everything was wet, the ground, the sky, you had to suck the air in through your teeth to warm it up. And the rain...
It came down, it came sideways and just to make sure you were wet - it bounced back up at you...!
This shot is partially inspired by one of my favourite images in TE: pic link
The image should (if the weather permitted) be of a white cottage with typical vegetation in the foreground and Mount Errigal in the distance.
So I have endevoured to capture the weather. It was more difficult than I imagined at first.
The ISO was set at 1600 at f/4.0 to allow a shutter speed fast enough to capture the drop in the frame with such low light. I focused manually on the origin of the drop which was just out of frame (top).
Then I set the camera to continuous shooting, and then it was all about waiting for the next drop. But it was completely random and even when I watched for the impending drop with my other eye the wind would tease me by blowing it out of frame.
A little post has been done - but just when converting from raw: saturation, hightlights and shadows.
The shot is moody and I have opted for almost black and white style as a reflection of how I feel about the day: Happy to be there but pissed off about the weather...
Thanks for looking. John.
P.S. I know that this is not going to be to many peoples taste, but it was the best I could deliver this weekend! |

Very nice idea John but I think high iso level effected to the sharpness badly. Also Sigma 70 300 (i have one of them too) has some focusing problems. But finally this is a nice photo.
