Dunguaire Castle, Kinvara, on Galway Bay, was built in 1520 by the Hynes Clan. The Clan association with the site goes back to 662 AD when Guaire, King of Connaught, an early ancestor of the clan, ruled the kingdom from an earthwork fort close to the site of the present castle. King Guaire was renowned for his generosity and hospitality and is said to have had one arm longer than the other from giving! He befriended St. Colman, the local saint, who founded the monastery at Kilmacduagh.
In the 17th century the castle passed to Richard Martyn, Mayor of Galway. After that it was purchased by Oliver St. John Gogarty and became the center of literary meetings of such writers as W.B. Yeats, his patron Lady Gregory, George Bernard Shaw, Edward Martin and J.M. Synge.
In 1954 Christobel Lady Ampthill acquired the castle and completed the restorations. It is now owned by Shannon Delvelopment and is open to the public for the summer season, and medieval banquets, complete with entertainment centered around the literary giants that once met here, are held twice nightly. |

Very nice. It reminds me a little of Jose Elias' work (minus his trademark post production work)! Beautiful colours. I would prefer to see someone (or something) going up or down the path though. Cheers!

Interesting note for this nice composition. Irish history is always fascinating. Concerning the picture itself, the square crop enhances the massive shape of the castle. Colors and light are nice, with a good contrast. But I don't like the thick blue, white and black border you add finally. It doesn't bring anything to your composition and it disturbs when looking at it. Nicely done, anyway !

I'm surprised that this photo has not gotten more points. The composition and colours are great. I would crop out most of the top, leaving only a small room above the castle. IMO this would create a better balanced framing.
Hi Joan, I really do like this shot, it reminds me of our trip to Scotland this summer. The colours are bright and vivid, which is your trademark :) Also, the road leads nicely into the castle for near perfect composition. I would agree with taivo that I may have cropped out the top but that's just a side thought. Regards, Don.
