Photographer's Note

A "plaggenhut" or "spitkeet" is a simple with slices of heath covered cabin.

"Plaggenhuts" were to be found in the poorest areas of the Netherlands, especially in Drenthe, Friesland and Overijssel. They were inhabited by the poorest workers, often with large families. Some of these "plaggenhuts" were inhabited untill in the beginning of the 20e century.

A "plaggenhut" was a very simple building. Mostly partial dug out in the ground and without side walls so that the roof began on ground level. The roof had been covered with slices that were found in the surrounding area.
