Trondheim is situated at the mouth of the river Nidelva, where it flows into Trondheim Fyord, with an excellent harbour and sheltered conditions.
Old storehouses flank both sides of the river, but they now host restaurants, hotels, private apartments...
"Gamle Bybro" or "the Old Town Bridge" or also "The Gate of Happiness" was built in 1861 after the great fire of the same year. The location had a military strategic significance, as it led directly to and from Kristiansten Fort east of the river.
