Photographer's Note

Lying between Benalmadena Pueblo and the coastal zone of the Costa del Sol, stands the Castillo Colomares (Colomares Castle) a truly unusual monument! Built by Esteban Martin and two stonemasons from nearby Mijas, it took from 1987 to 1994 to create this masterpiece of Byzantine, Roman, Gothic and Mudejar architecture that pays homage to Christopher Columbus and his discovery of America. The structure not only shows the history of the discovery but also renders homage to the three religions that were professed in fourteenth century Spain. Certain architectural features therefore correspond to Christian, Hebrew and, naturally, Mohammedan traditions.
