Smögen is a small town on an island in the Bohuslän district of Sweden.
The first time Smögen was mentioned in any document was at the end of the 16th century. At the time the name was Smögit.
The origin of the name is probably derived from the narrow channel Smyghålet (the Sneak Hole), that you can find at the end of Smögen’s harbour.
In the 1930's and 1940's Smögen developed into an elegant vacation spot where the well-to-do and the jet set of the day traveled to enjoy social life, seaweed bathing and tea.
But as the Smögen Bridge was completed in 1970 and automobile travelling increased, day tourists have replaced the spa vacationers of yore. Much of this tourist activity centers around Smögen´s famous pier - actually a series of short boat landings built in the 19th centurey, and combined to form one single long pier in 1950.
This is Smögen´s promenade walk (Smögenbryggan), quit in the winter but bustling with life in the summer, as tourists avail themselves of hamburger bars, boardwalk restaurants, souvenir shops, ice-cream kiosks, and clothing boutiques. With the explosive popularity of boating in the last several decades, Smögen´s harbor has become a popular place for pleasure boats to anchor during the warm season.
Sweden’s 2nd largest fish auction is located to Smögen. Here fishing vessels land their hauls of fresh fish and sea food. Don’t forget to experience fresh Smögen prawns when you are there.

I was lucky here, because when approaching the town by car under a heavy rain, most of the day tourists were in a hurry to leave it. One hour later the clouds were gone and had a fantastic and relaxing sunny evening.
