Photographer's Note

A Beefeater in a situation, which is more closer to Gert's memories.
Though I have posted four photos of them, I haven't explained the origin of the name. According to Wikipedia the name is of uncertain origin, with various proposed derivations. Firstly, it was a slang term for the English in general.Secondly - based on a description from the old time -, 'very large ration of beef is given to them daily at the court' As a possible explanation that's why they are called Beef-eaters". Thirdly, some etymologists have noted the term's similarity to hláf-æta, the Old English term for a menial servant, lit. Last, but not least some claim that the name derives from buffetier, an Old French term meaning 'a waiter or servant' at a sideboard. - The only thing sure is that nothing is for sure! :)
