Another photo from my weekend at Dorset Coast of Southern England. Dorset coast is truly great place to be if you like coastal photographs, it is full of rocky shores and beautiful stones to use as foreground. Not like in NL, well we have lot of mills here :)

Dorset, England, rests on a variety of different rock types which give the county its interesting landscapes and habitats. Dorset is particularly noted for its coastline, the Jurassic Coast, which in 2001 was designated a World Heritage Site because of the variety of landforms and fossils exhibited along the coast.

Dorset's coastline is one of the most visited and studied coastlines in the world because it shows, along the course of 95 miles (including some of east Devon) rocks from the beginning of Triassic, through the Jurassic and up to the end of the Cretaceous, documenting the entire Mesozoic era with well preserved fossils. Particularly famous are the Triassic and Jurassic cliffs around Lyme Regis which have yielded many notable fossil finds, including Mary Anning's Ichthyosaur. The variety of geology leads to a variety of habitats, from the heathland of the Tertiary beds at Poole harbour and Studland, to the Chalk downland where the Cretaceous beds reach the sea. There are also small areas of karst landscape on the Jurassic limestones.

What makes Dorset's coast particularly important to geologists though are the series of landforms which occur so close together, on the concordant and discordant coastlines. The most famous include Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door natural arch, Old Harry Rocks and Chesil Beach, a tombolo. The Portland limestone of the Isle of Portland and the Purbeck Limestone of Purbeck have been quarried for use in building much of London, hundreds of thousands of British war grave stones and memorials, and the United Nations head quarters.

Hi Lucie,

There have been quite a few very good UK coastal imges posted on TE recently - this is another one. Living too far away from the coast, I've been a little envious. But, I decided that I should stop feeling envious and make to most of my locality... So I've tried applying the great techniques I see here to my landscapes.

Hi Lucie - This is a very "Burtonesque" shot, which is not surprising since you were visiting Dorset! You got a very good reflection off the water and the wet sand to lighten the frame and really show the shapes of the rocks. Great work!

Hey Lucie,

Amazing shot! I can see that Adam has showed you some beautiful places in England. What a great place for photographs. I love how the rocks are centred in this photo drawing the eye of the viewer right in. The composition is great, the colours are amazing and I love the low angle. Great work, Lucie!

Yes I like coastal photographs! :) This one is truly beautiful, colours and composition are realy amazing. I like the way you decided to emphasize the foreground by placing the horizon high in the frame. Very moody and pleasant, keep posting.
