| The pier at Hythe, Hampshire was originally built in Victorian times. It is 640 metres in length and is used by ferry boats plying the Solent to cross to Southampton. On the right side of the picture is the track for the pier railway which runs the length of the pier, and which was built to carry passengers and luggage out to the ferry boats. At the end of the pier is an excellent viewpoint for looking at the big liners which come and go into Southampton harbour. Last November a ferry boat crashed into the side of the pier and took out 25 metres of it, which has now been replaced and everything is back in working order. |

I love the perspective on this shot, disappearing down to the ship at the far end - it gives an idea of the immense scale of this endeavour.
I an also glad to hear that it is still actively maintained, quite often this type of heritage disappeats all to easily.
[Small note on your bio - I always thought that once a grandmother, always a grandmother, I wasn't aware that it was possible to retire from that duty. Ah well you learn all sorts on TE ;-) ]
Really nice depth to this photo Joan, as well as pleasant lighting and a subject for the eye to follow at the end of the pier. It's a rather serene and expansive photo, and quite uncluttered. The clouds stand out really well -- did you use a polariser?

I grew up in Dibden Purlieu and have found memories of catching the train that runs up this peir.
I like the colours and the way the peir disappears into the distance. It's a shame there where not more clouds in the sky, but thats life I guess.
