The site's Iranian name is Takht-é Jamshid,"The throne of Jamshid", a mythical King of Iran.
The site is located in the plain of Marv Dasht,60km North-East of Shiraz and 420km South of Esfahan on an altitude of 1,800 meters. The exact date of the foundation of Persepolis is not known. It is assumed that Darius I began work at the end of VI century B.C.,although more than a century passed before it was finally completed. The splendor of Persepolis, however, was short-lived. The palaces were looted and burned by Alexander the Great in 330 B.C. The ruins were not excavated until an American sponsored archaeological expedition to Persepolis from 1931 to 1939.
In the background of the photo You can see "The Gate of All Nations",built by Xerxes. All visitors had to pass through this gate which was the only entrance to the terrace, on their way to the Throne Hall to pay homage to the king.

Hi Attila
An impressive shot of this site. The composition is first class with the statue to the right revealing more of the site in the background. The quality of the image is superb, as are the colours and textures that you have captured. A very successful and well composed piece of work.

Hi Attila,
Brilliant composition with the big rocks in the foreground dwarfing the columns and gates in the distance on the left. Well exposed and good long depth of field to reveal lots of texture and detail in the stones.
