Petra, which means rock in Greek, is an archaeological site in southwestern Jordan, lying on the slope of Mount Hor. It was hidden in the mountains for thousands of years when the Swiss explorer Johan Ludwig Burckhardt discovered it in 1812. So far, no method has been found to determine when the history of Petra began. Evidence suggests that the city was founded relatively late, though a sanctuary may have existed there since very ancient times. Buildings like temples and tombs are all carved out of the red-pink sandstone cliffs, which also gives it the name of "rose-red city".
