This picture was taken from just a few hundred metres south of this one as the sun fell below the cliffs behind me. Here we are looking more or less due north from Seacliff beach and the island is the Bass Rock which lies about 2 kilometres offshore.
The Bass Rock (or simply the Bass) is is an island in the outer part of the Firth of Forth in the east of Scotland. It is a steep-sided volcanic rock, 107 metres (351 ft) at its highest point, and is home to a large colony of gannets, being the largest single rock gannetry in the World. The rock is currently uninhabited, but historically has been settled by an early Christian hermit, and later was the site of an important castle, which was, after the Commonwealth, used as a prison. The Bass Rock features in numerous works of fiction, including Robert Louis Stevenson's Catriona and, interestingly, the lighthouse which you can see was actually built in 1902 by David Stevenson, cousin of the author: the Stevensons were a family of famous lighthouse builders in the 19th Century. The lighthouse is now no longer manned but controlled remotely from Edinburgh.
You can see from where I took this picture if you click on Map:view and, if you zoom out, you will be able to see the Bass Rock directly north of that point.

I like very much your composition. Most of all I like the form created by the line between the sea and the sand. Very nice colors and so beautiful and warm lighting all around the landscape. I enjoy it very much!

the colours in this picture immediately stand out, especially the wonderful mix of colours in the sky which are reflected nicely in the foreground sand. the light is fantastic as it rests on bass rock and really makes it stand in the frame. the portrait format is excellent in this composition.

Hello John ,
What a perfectly composed picture ! From the FG to the Bg , all is exactly at the right place . Games of lights are wonderful . Like especially the contrast between the light blue water , the black rocks and the warm colors of the island .
One of your best .

You are really working the light these days. I see a man with time on his hands !
Very properly composed, as ever, and with your picturesque subject and perfect light you have to be onto a winner !
And I sure you are. I predict the smilies will reflect that too..
What I really do like is the twinkling of the lights on the far coast, very good. I just wish the foreground detail was rock or seaweed, or driftwood maybe, not a yucky bit of foam ! But we work with what we are given !

You have lovely balance, here. That colourfully flecked sky is beautifully reflected in the wet sand, sandwiching the rock between the two.
Can you see how the f/g foam appears to be mimicking the Bass Rock?
Beside the lovely evening light, your shot carries a calming atmosphere; maybe it is due to the lull of the breaking waves and the emptiness of the beach; nothing to disturb one's thoughts.
My warm regards,

Hello Mr Tyro- I wonder how long and how much patience you took to wait for the perfect moment.. even to the small reflection of the left over wave on the sandy beach - . wonderful posting with Bass Rock basking in the evening sun. Great posting my friend. I see from your photos that it is worth having a 5D.. keep in touch Rich

Hello John - Light on the rock and lighthouse, warm and attractive. Beautiful pastel sky and very good reflections in the sand (I like the sea foam). I can see you are really beginning to immerse yourself in the finer points of landscape work ... very impressive! Warm regards Rosemary
PS. Not too much to report on the grads. I have had a few trials and the quality is good but I really need the right location and time to use them properly. I'm afraid I need to get back to Scotland!

Hi John, I live so far away from the see that I have no opportunity to see such a view. Beautiful colours of the sand reflecting warm sunset solours, nice patches of snow. Beautiful rock with a lighthouse strangely situated, not on the top of it. fantastic atmosphere.

Oooh, now this is one beautiful seascape. The coast seems so rugged and untouched and you've achieved a beautiful colour palette here. Excellent vertical frame gives even more depth and the reflections on the sand are just magical. Congratulations on this amazing photo.

a beautiful shot. I love your POV and composition, the little blob of foam looks wonderful and acts as an anchor point almost like a stepping stone into the main subject of the image. A glorious light and flawless capture with immaculate and attractive details. I love it!
Have a good day - Brian.

The sharp contours and bright colours of this rock contrast the soft and pleasant colours of the clouds above. These colours are beautifully reflected in the wet sand. The little piece of froth is nicely balancing the hard rock further away. A very attractive picture!

Hi John, Keep meaning to critique this splendid photo with the fantastic Bass rock.Every thing in this is captivating the viewer from the Fg, soft sand to couple of blobs of foam, then on to the sea and rocks Mg, then on to the show stopper the glorious Bass Rock backing in great sunshine and surrounded by fluffy clouds.
fotka (4875) 2012-02-18 8:53
I like the warm colors of your photo. The rock is still in full sun so it gets nice orange colors,
Great composition with waves, sunset sky that shows reflection on the water. Well done!

Ciao e buona serata
