Welcome to Washington

I actually hadn’t really timed to start my series from Washington, D.C. right at this moment, just before the U.S. midterm elections next Tuesday and a day after the release of the sixth and final season of my favourite TV series House of Cards, whose first episode I watched last night and which is all about the political arena in the capital city of the United States.

“Welcome to Washington” were words uttered by fictional Congressman Francis J. Underwood in the very first episode of Netflix series House of Cards, released in 2013. A lot has changed since then, both in the series and in the real world. Underwood is no longer part of the latest series following #MeToo accusations made against the man who played him, Kevin Spacey, and his subsequent dismissal from the show.

It was our second visit to Washington, D.C., but I only posted two photos from my first visit, both featuring the very same building I am showing you today: the United States Capitol, home of the United States Congress, the legislative branch of the U.S. government, consisting of the Senate and the House of Representatives. Located at Capitol Hill at the eastern end of the National Mall, its construction started in 1793, when the young Republic was only 17 years old. The iconic dome, seen here from the roof terrace of the National Gallery and whose wall is just seen at the right hand side, wasn’t completed until the 1860s. It is crowned by the 6-metre tall Statue of Freedom, made by Thomas Crawford between 1857 and 1862.

We spent our first day in Washington, D.C. inside the National Gallery. It was a cloudy day and for the next day sun was forecast, so that first day was best spent in a museum. In fact, from now on, there will be a lot more sun and blue skies in my photos, as the weather improved significantly after our first week in the U.S. last summer.
