Rotorua is located at the heart of the North Island of New Zealand, in the aptly called Bay of Plenty region and is part also of the Central Volcanic Plateau. It is at 234 kms South-East from Auckland by road and has a population of about 69,000 people. Rotorua is built over a geothermal hot spot, on the shores of Lake Rotorua. The Arawa tribes were the main pre-European inhabitants of Rotorua. The traditional centre for the Arawa people is Ohinemutu, situated on the shore of lake. Ohinemutu contains a marae, (is a sacred place which served both religious and social purposes in pre-Christian Polynesian societies) and the Tamatekapua meeting house (named after the leader of the canoe in which the Arawa came to Rotorua). On the picture you can see the lake shore and the signs of geothermal activities, and The Art & History Museum, located in the Government Gardens and has nice exhibits and contains artifacts that display the cultural heritage of these peoples.
