Akaroa, South Island, New Zealand

Our last 3 nights of our South Island holiday last April we spent at Akaroa, about 85 kilometres from Christchurch.

Akaroa is a charming historic seaside village with strong French and British influences from early settlers, and it sits at the edge of a beautiful harbour inside the eroded crater of a huge extinct volcano.

Originally a French settlement, the town is elegant and full of character. The streets have French names and local restaurants focus on French cuisine.

The French settlers who arrived to establish the town in 1840 thought they were the first colonists of a new French territory, however the Treaty of Waitangi was signed just days before they arrived, which gave Britain sovereignty over the whole of New Zealand.

Approximately the permanent population is around 1000, and they live in about 25% of the houses – the rest are rented over the summer.

This is the wharf where most of the boats leave to take the tourists out into the harbour and outside the heads. We had a very enjoyable trip out on a boat, and we saw dolphins, penguins and fur seals, as well as many sea birds too.

The clouds covered many of the hills on that last day we were staying there, but we never got any rain.

Hi Janice. It’s been an awfully long time since I’ve been to Akaroa but I have fond memories of the place. Nice photo. Good colours and details. Nice composition also, I like the gull in the corner, I think he adds depth. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

Hi Janice,
Too different views of this village. This shows it as a fishing port, while the previous was more leisure oriented. And the weather is is more gloomy, low clouds but also sunny spots on the background. I think I like this more. Besides that gull is very well placed.

Hi Janice,
most of all I like the seagull, this bird is just the icing on the cake! The colours are outstanding, especially the blue of the sea against the blue houses. Then the atmosphere is wonderful, must be a very nice place to live. My compliments!
Warm regards
Harriet

Hello Janice,
very beautiful harbour! It looks so nice and tranquil. I like those low soft clouds covering the tops of the hills!
Bright blue houses and a red boat brighten up the image in a very lovely way :) Good composition.
greetings from Moscow,
Elena
