These three children live in Ioribaiwa village in the Owen Stanley Ranges of Papua New Guinea - their village is only accessible by foot. We passed through Ioribaiwa village on the morning of the second day of an 8day and 96km trek along the Kokoda Track.

The Kokoda Track passes through the battlefields of one of the bloodiest campaigns of World War 2 where 3000 Japanese and 600 Australians lost their lives.

Ioribaiwa was the furtherest point reached by the Japanese advance. Here the Australian diggers suffered under the Japanese mountain guns before the tide turned and they began forcing the the Japanese back.

The colourful children show life has moved on despite the grey past of their village.

Hello Marlene
Pretty shot , this three kids looks beautiful, you show us what kind of life some people living, i like too the non color background , you did very good PP work.
Well Done
Maged

Hello Marlene,

Very nice take of these three children and very effective pp work too. The desaturation of the background made the children outstand much more. Fine photo work.

Regards,
JR

Clever saturation work - the kids really stand out in strong, full colour... creating a rather surreal effect.
Cheers!
Dave

Hello Marlene,
A technically interesting picture, where the desaturation of the background gets a fuller meaning, especially when you mention "the grey past of their village". Well done. As a triple portrait it's also an excellent picture.
I had in mind long ago to go to Papua New Guinea, but I was turned off by the costs and, admittedly, by the stories of the violent gangs of "rascals" in the towns.
Regards,
Gert

This is simply an amazing work the image simply speaks for itself.

What an incredible place to be and what a lovely capture! I like the colour effect of the children against the grey background. Interesting note as well- a topic I know nothing about and am glad to have learned a little from you!
Sarah

Their poses are great, they're so at ease. But I have to say I don't think the partial desaturation is right for this scene. It makes it look like they're standing in a diorama or in front of a projection screen or something. It separates them from their village, their home. Just my odd taste, perhaps--others may love it. Regards, Ken.

I think it was interesting you have put the background in B&W while children was in colors. I liked the pov and the way they are. Very nice light and sharpness.
