The Sultanahmet Mosque, or with its famous name the Blue Mosque, was built during the rule of Sultan Ahmet I, between the years 1609 and 1616. The architect was his royal architect 'Sedefkar Mehmet Ağa', who was the chief assistant of the great architect Sinan. The reason of the mosque also being called as "Blue mosque" is the blue tiles covering the interior walls.
The Sultan Ahmed Mosque was the first mosque that has six minarets. When the number of minarets was revealed, the Sultan was criticized for presumption, since this was, at the time, the same number as at the mosque of the Ka'aba in Mecca. He overcame this problem by paying for a seventh minaret at the Mecca mosque. The other two minarets are at the end of the forecourt and have only two balconies while the others have three balconies.
