El estrecho de Gibraltar, es una separación natural entre dos masas de agua: el mar Mediterráneo y el océano Atlántico y entre dos continentes: Europa y África. Incluso geológicamente, el estrecho representa la fisura de las dos placas tectónicas: la placa de Eurasia y la placa Africana.

Su longitud es de 14,4 km en su parte más angosta, entre punta de Oliveros (España) y punta Cires (Marruecos), y su profundidad varía entre unos 280 m en el Umbral de Camarinal hasta algo menos de 1000 m a la altura de la bahía de Algeciras. En pocos lugares del mundo existen tantos contrastes sociales en una distancia tan corta. La parte española está protegida por el Parque Natural del Estrecho.

The Strait of Gibraltar (Arabic: مضيق جبل طارق, Spanish: Estrecho de Gibraltar) is a narrow strait that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and separates Spain from Morocco. The name comes from Gibraltar, which in turn originates from the Arabic Jebel Tariq, albeit the Arab name for the Strait is Bab el-Zakat or "Gate of Charity". It is also known as the Straits of Gibraltar or STROG (Strait Of Gibraltar), in naval use and as "Pillars of Hercules " in the ancient world.

Europe and Africa are separated by 14.24 km (7.7 nautical miles) of ocean at the strait's narrowest point. The strait depth ranges between 300 and 900 metres (980 and 3,000 ft) which possibly interacted with the lower mean sea level of the last major glaciation 20,000 years before present when the level of the sea was believed to be 110 to 120 meters (361 to 394 ft) lower. Ferries cross between the two continents every day in as little as 35 minutes. The Spanish side of the strait is protected under the El Estrecho Natural Park.
