Photographer’s Note

This image was taken close to where the small river ends in the lake, and the river is where the trout go to spawn this time of year.

Trout are usually found in cool (10-15°C), clear streams and lakes, and understanding how moving water shapes the stream will improve your chances of finding and catching trout.

In most streams, the current creates a riffle-run-pool pattern that repeats itself over and over. A deep pool may hold a big brown trout, but rainbows and smaller browns are likely found in runs. Riffles are where you will find small trout during the day, and larger trout coming in during morning and evening feeding periods.

Trout generally feed on other fish and different insects, and the diet of the day will give an indication of which bait will be successful. And if anything else fails, try worms..!

Some are wondering about the red fruit to the left side, they are rowan berries and very popular with the smaller birds.

----------

Trout are a number of species of freshwater and saltwater fish belonging to the Salmonidae family. Salmon belong to the same family as trout but, unlike most trout, most salmon species spend almost all their lives in salt water.
