Photographer’s Note

Panagia Spiliani or Virgin Mary of the cave.

In the hill that dominates north of Pythagorio and in the entry of cavern finds the Monastery of the Virgin Mary,Spiliani.The haze of mythology wants, the behind of the Monastery cavern,to be used in ancient years (600-500 B.C.), as Οracle from Sibyl Fiti.

The cavern is connected unbreakable with Christian deliveries of the people of Samos, as it was one from the main places of adoration at the first years of Christians period. In 1943,in the middle of the Second World War, the Abbey and the network of caverns that is found around, was used by the residents of Pythagorio, as den at the German bombardments.

From the balcony of Abbey the visitor can admire the splendid view to the plain of Xora,the Pythagoreio, and gazing the immense light of the blue sea,touches upon Agathonisi and the Asia Minor.

Παναγία η Σπηλιανή

Στον λόφο που δεσπόζει βορείως του Πυθαγορείου και στην είσοδο ενός σπηλαίου βρίσκεται η Ι.Μ. Παναγία η Σπηλιανή. Η αχλή της μυθολογίας θέλει το όπισθεν της Ι.Μ. σπήλαιο να εχρησιμοποιείτο κατά τους αρχαίους χρόνους (600-500 Π.Χ.) ως Μαντείο από την Σίβυλλα ΦΥΤΩ.

Το εν λόγω σπήλαιο συνδέεται άρρηκτα με τις χριστιανικές των Σαμίων παραδόσεις αφού ήταν ένας από τους κύριους τόπους λατρείας κατά την πρωτοχριστιανική περίοδο. Το 1943 μεσούντος του Δευτέρου Παγκόσμιου Πολέμου η Μονή και το δίκτυο των σπηλαίων που βρίσκεται πέριξ αυτής χρησιμοποιήθηκαν από τους κατοίκους του Πυθαγορείου ως κρησφύγετο κατά τους γερμανικούς βομβαρδισμούς.

Από τους εξώστες της Μονής ο επισκέπτης μπορεί να θαυμάσει την υπέροχη θέα προς τον κάμπο της Χώρας, το Πυθαγόρειο, και ατενίζοντας το απέραντο γαλάζιο της θάλασσας αγγίζει το Αγαθονήσι και την Μικρά Ασία.

You managed the difficult light well to give us an interesting documentary posting. Greece, with its many surviving artifacts of ancient civilizations, is certainly the place to see the takeover of holy places by the whoever happens to be the 'new boss' at the time.

An intriguing and very well composed photo. This place is really so interesting and you managed the light conditions very welll. I like very much the contrast between the dark rock and the white chapel and thanks to the excellent sharpness it's possible to appreiate the fine textures of rock and walls.

At first I thought there was two moons, a light and the moon. The use of a tripod and of an exposure time of 1/15 of a seconds is giving a nice image. The point of view is allowing us to see the details and colors of this section of the monastery. Well done, have a nice day.

Danos, nice shot, the dampness of the cave comes through clearly and maybe because it is already cold here where I am the picture seems to have that same feeling. Nice deep shadows, fine work.
