Photographer’s Note
Dresden was one of Europe's most beautiful cities until February, 1945 when Allied forces smashed it to smithereens with thousands of incendiary bombs. The Baroque city core was all but wiped out with only a few structures surviving the onslaught. Dresden was full of refugees fleeing the advancing Russian army at the time and the loss of life was horrendous. Today the people of Dresden are rebuilding their city and though they have suffered massive military attacks and 50 years of Russian occupation, they persevere.
