Cave Theosktisti or covered by God

In a part of an Abbey exists also the cave “Τheoskepasti”- 'covered by God' ,where according to the tradition when they were found the honest remains of Saint, without they know in who or who they belonging, they carried them in the neighbour found cavern “Theoskepasti”, in which they found a small chapel, while they did not cease their request to God to reveals in who belong the honest remains. In the chapel known as “Theoskeposti” is saved the old carved in wood chancel screen of temple of Abbey.

Ιερά Μονή Οσίας θεοκτίστης της Λεσβίας

Η Μονή βρίσκεται στα βόρεια της Ικαρίας στο χωριό Πηγή σε όμορφο πευκόφυτο περιβάλλον.
Ο ιερός ναός είναι εξ ολοκλήρου τοιχογροφημένος με μορφές Αγίων και παραστάσεις της Πολαιάς και Κοινής Διαθήκης, ενώ δεξιά από την εξωτερική είσοδο είναι ζωγραφισμένες και οι μορφές των δωρητών της αγιογραφήσεως.
Σώζονται επίσης και διάφορες επιγραφές που μαρτυρούν επιμέρους προσφορές (δεήσεις) δωρητών.
Το ακριβές έτος ιδρύσεως της Ιεράς Μονής δεν είναι ιστορικά βεβαιωμένο, από σωζόμενη επιγραφή πληροφορούμαστε ότι το έτος ιδρύσεως είναι 1688, μήνας Οκτώβριος.
Συμπεραίνουμε πάντως ότι το Μοναστήρι έχει ιδρυθεί πριν από το έτος 1688.
Στην ακμή του, το 1500 μ.Χ., το μοναστήρι είχε περίπου 100 καλόγηρους, ενώ το 1982 έφυγαν και οι δύο τελευταίες μοναχές. Σήμερα, ο ταξιδιώτης μπορεί να επισκεφτεί το μοναστήρι, το οποίο επιβλέπει μια χωρική.
Η Μονή πλην του καθολικού έχει επίσης και περίπου 15 κελιά και βοηθητικούς χώρους.
Στην Μονή αυτή υπάρχει επίσης και “θεοσκέπαστη” όπου σύμφωνα με την παράδοση όταν βρέθηκαν τατίμια λείψανατης Αγίας, χωρίς να γνωρίζουν σε ποιον ή ποια ανήκουν, τα μετέφερον στο πλησίον ευρισκόμενο σπήλαιο “Θεοσκέπαστη”, μέσα στο οποίο κατασκεύασαν το μικρό παρεκκλήσι, ενώ δεν έπαψαν να παρακαλούν το Θεό νο τους αποκαλύψει σε ποιόν ανήκουν τατίμια λείψανα.
Στο παρεκκλήσι γνωστό ως “Θεοσκέποστη” σώζεται το παλαιό ξυλόγλυπτο τέμπλο του ναού της Μονής.
Η μνήμη της Όσιας τιμάται πανηγυρικά στην Μονή στις 9 Νοεμβρίου.

I like the spiritual atmosphere which you knew to keep in your photograph. Withdrawn hermitages, or the withdrawn vaults of the World, are always captivating and sizeable. Hello Danos,

you are showing us a very interesting and curious chapel. The place is very picturesque and evokative and you managed to frame it well. Beside being a fine subject I like the soft warm light and the good clarity of the image.
We have similar caves in the granite rocks in Sardinia but nobody thought to turn them into a chapel. Also the bushes and trees around the cave are the same as here, so actually, apart from the chapel, it seems a place where I often go for a walk.

That's now this rock abbey, I have read about so much. The strangest what I can see is the roof, two huge rocks! You really must be a man of god, to live like this. Despite the stops between the rock and the sky all details can be seen. well done

I think this is incredibly original! The only part of Greece I have had a chance of visiting, is Crete, and I was stunned by the amount of chapels and oratories we could find anywhere and everywhere. Somebody gave me the explanation that The Greeks are a great nation of sailors, and that a lot of them built chapels to thank God for their coming back home safe! (see my pic 72 and its additional photos!)
Well, yours is one of the most original chapels I have ever seen. I wonder if those big stones were there naturally, or if they carried them to make a roof to the chapel! What a weight! Congratulations for this very interesting and original post! I have enjoyed the interior of the chapel in WS too.
