This image was taken from the ferry after leaving Vigur Island on the way back to Isafjodur. The mountains in the back ground are not part of the island. They are on the opposite side of the fjord

The island Vigur is located in in the fjord Ísafjarðardjúp in the West Fjords about 1/2 hour by boat from Ísafjörður. It is the second largest island in the fjord . It has an area of 0.59 km ², with a length of about 2.0 km and a width of up to 400 m.

A single farm is located on the island. It has been farmed for 170 years by the same family.
The down from eider ducks is processed here.

On the island nest, many other birds, including especially the Arctic Tern , Puffin and Black Guillemot . Young puffins in the colony here are culled each year.
On the island is a small windmill (1840) which was in operation until 1917. It is the only surviving windmill on Iceland and is a listed building. A rowing boat from the beginning of the 19th Century, the eight-oar Vigur-Breiður , is still used to bring sheep from the mainland.
