Photographer's Note

This is one of our stops on the road between Ayacucho and Vilcashuaman. (A few hours after stopping ofr breakfast in the latest photo). This is a small forest of Puyas. There is a much larger one, but it takes a three hour hike to get to it, so we had to be happy with visiting this one.

Puyas ara plants that are related to pinapple trees. The pointy parts are flowers which take up to 100 years to fully flourish and can reach a diameter of 2 meters and a height of 10 meters making it the biggest flower in the world. Once the plant has totally flowered, it keeps it for three months before starting its death process. The Puya only grows in some locations in Peru.

In the workshop you can find me and my friend next to one not fully grown one.
