I started my trip in Guadeloupe on the Eastern part of the island called Grande-Terre. Guadeloupe is formed like a butterfly and its two wings are completely different in many ways.

Grande-Terre is for the most part rather flat and most people and more commercial. The beaches there are postcard worthy as they are composed of white sand and turquoise water wherever you look.

The western island, Basse-Terre, is where the active volcano La Soufrière is located. This part is much less developed and its terrain is nothing like what you can find in Grande-Terre. The southern beaches in Basse-Terre are filled with volcanic black sand which is an element of surprise for the picture chasers!

Anyway, to get back to my story, I was not impressed with the sunsets in Grande-Terre. I was left on my appetite. But then I headed west to Basse-Terre and everything changed!!!

Somehow, I have this feeling that I should have been able to predict I would catch nicer sunsets heading West on an island...
