Pan-American Highway
Peru Highway 1, most widely known as Carretera Panamericana is the most important highway in Peru.
This road is the Peruvian portion of the Pan-American Highway. It runs north-south through the whole length of the country and connects all major cities in the country's coastal area. The northern terminus of the highway is located in Aguas Verdes (Tumbes Region) at the border with Ecuador. Starting in this point, the highway is known as Carretera Panamericana Norte ("North Pan-American Highway") until it reaches a point located in central Lima, the country's capital. Going south from this point, the highway is called Carretera Panamericana Sur ("South Pan-American Highway"), until it reaches the southern terminus, located in the Santa Rosa Border Post, in the Tacna Region at the border with Chile.

This picture is made near Nazca were the road cutts two of the famous Nazca lines. I stood on a large tower were two of those lines can be seen, but also the road that is dividing the landscape...

Hello Hank,
Perfect high angle shot of this vastness of space with the highway running across. The vehicles are in sharp details and the mountain/rock formation is stunning against the blue sky.

just perfect... the road leading our eyes through the picture...

Hello Henk,

I would hate for my car to break down along this stretch of road, as it seem to be in the middle of nowhere! Very nice picture of this arid and inhospitable landscape. The blue streak of sky create a nice contrast amid this warm coloured environment. Thanks for sharing :-)

Roberto

Hi Henk
The Chile highway look like the Peru highway... Same desert, same mountains, same dry weather. The difference is the tower witch make possible this different photo.
Cheers
JP

Dag Henk,
Prima werk!
Groetjes
Wanda

Hi Henk
I like the POV such that the road forms a diagonal line. The colour of the truck really stands out. How long did you have to wait for that one?
Phil

Hi Henk,
I guess the locals must have been surprised to see that you were taking shots of the Pan American from the "mirador" instead of the Nazca Lines. ;o)
It's wonderful view of that road that you've managed and I really like the way that straight, dark line crosses the whole compo, disappearing in the horizon. Colours are exactly what I remember of the place and of course these two blue trucks make an excellent foreground subject.
Have a nice day.

G'Day Henk,

I have heard about the Nazca lines many times, they are very peculiar. In Australia, a similar feature was found in 1998 called the ”Marree Man” depicting an Aboriginal man holding a throwing stick. It was on top of a desert plateau near Lake Eyre in South Australia. My family was in the area during its 'discovery'. At 4,200 metres long, it is the world's largest artwork. The Nazca lines are particularly interesting considering the age and intention.

This is a good photo of this remote part of the world. I like the way the road slices the photo in half. Also of interest is the shadow which cavers much of the frame and then suddenly stops further along. A great frame, well done.

P.s. Hope you like the New Zealand info I posted. :)

Matt

Hello Henk,
It is a great photo...with your own amazing style! The idea first and the result next.I love the never ending perspective through the road...it is a pleasure for the eyes... and the desert all around!

Have a nice day,

Bonjour Henk
Très belle image de cette route rectiligne qui conduit le regard jusqu'à l'horizon, au milieu d'une région désertique. Les camions donnent de la couleur et de l'animation au cliché.
Merci pour le partage et bonne journée.

Hello Henk,

You perfectly succeeded in highlighting the vastness of this landscape! The road makes it possible to plunge in the image ! All is well placed in this photography! The blue truck points out the sky and is an excellent point of hangs!
I wonder how you found this point of view elevated!
If the lines of Nasca are cut, it is not astonishing that the extraterrestrial ones do not come any more to be posed on this plate ! ;-))
Very well done !

Hello Henk. One does not have to make many words. The photo is again a photographic maximum performance. Really impressing. Best regards, Wolfgang.

Hi Henk,
If I am not mistaken I read somewhere about 'Nazca Civilization’, is this the same place?

The POV is very effective. I like the way the road meet one corner (on the right) of the image. The landscape is very beautiful and giving some place to the sky is a very good idea. TFS.

This is really fascinating, Henk, reminded me of the old film "Convoy" with Kris Kristofferson... The ultra deep perspective of the road which cuts the frame in two like a knife, and those two trucks... really well captured!

Cheers
Alexander

such depth here henk, and the well chosen angle. The trucks stand out against the vast mountains. What a landscape, i have never set foot in South America, which makes it more interstign for me.

Great depth, huge depth!!! i love the feeling. The colors are also remarkable, reddish on the mountains then grey enhanced by the blue of the trucks. So well seen.

Tell me, you painted the trucks with that turquoise blue in order to match the beautiful sky! :)))
I mean, it's perfect. Those blue trucks had so much life to the scene and you couldn't ask for better colors here. I love these type of scenes very much. Long roads are a favorite subject of mine. Really have to portrait them one of these days. Clarity and colors are perfect here. Great compo!

this a very impressive dry landscape!I like the red mountains contrasting with the grey flat ground. The POV is superb, and the straight long road gives a great impression of depth! The blue colours of the trucks are in a perfect harmony with the ground!Superb

Hi Henk,
Standing on the tower gave you a good elevated position to better render the sensation of wide nearly empty spaces, the road that disppears into infinity also contributes well to this, as do the succeeding vehicles on the road, and even though the first truck is not RED, that blue is not that bad, in any case better than any yellow truck ;-)
Have a nice day JY

Salut Henk,
Wow !
An amazing one, all elements are perfectly composed, the depth is just incredible, and the truck add nice point to look at.

Hi Henk,
The landscape is very similar (identical) to the north of Chile. And yet, despite having driven thousand of kilometers in a similar ladnscape, I have never seen the Panamericana from this angle: your composition is superb, and it is clear that you put your usual good effort to get the photo. "Snapshot" is not in your vocabulary!
well done, I like it
jorge

Hi Henk,
Those blue trucks work so well as main focal points. Open desert views are always attractive. And here you've got good contrast which is often missing on those, thanks to cloud shadow on foreground. No mentionable obstacles, no need to make curves on roads. Although there's researches that indicate that some curves prevent drivers from falling asleep.
Kari

Hoi Henk,

Lekker wijds!

Groet! Dennis

jee, henk...

that's quite some DOF and clarity... all to the horizon, the road seems perfect... at f/8 aperture...

but let's not talk about technicalities. that's a beauty, this shot. the composition, the perspective, the colors, the clarity, the 'en route' ambience. amazing! a great portrait of pan-americana! and another incentive for me to go more south on it next time. ;)

TFS and regards,
kristaps

by the way, how did you catch those moving trucks so sharp at 1/100?

I suppose it is because of your super duper secret USM technique (LOL!!!) that the sharpness is just right. Good color and composition, decent exposure.

Good note to. The two lines are hard to see, but then that is probably because we have to be in an alien spacecraft from another planet flying overhead to see them clearly.

Hallo Henk,
amazing depth and what a straight road, no steering wheel needed for a long time for other things as to give the hands something.
The line of the mountains is very well descending to the road and the sky behind adds also attention. Everything like done for you to be captured in a magnificent quality.

Nice view of this famous road going through a famous place. It's amazing how flat the land is, and how straight that road is. Nice use of the diagonal line to give this a sense of direction and dynamism. Well done!

Hi Henk,

I don't think this is a very common photo and highways have never been so photogenic!

You've found the perfect spot to get this "aerial view" that made this incredible perspective achievable. It's surprising to see all the details you were able to get from the landscape, and what could have been a boring photo is actually a stunning one. I don't know if you had to wait very long to get this blue truck, but in any case, it's a key element in your composition.

Only you could have made an highway almost poetic!... :-P) It makes me think of the first Steven Spielberg's movie; Duel...

Salute my friend!

A fine composition making good use of the road as lead-lines. th e well placed trucks are also very important in the composition,

Hello Henk,

This at first glance would be considered a simple composition yet its very complex and I'm sure it took you a considerable amount of time and energy to get it just the way you want. You probably waited until just the right car come through the frame and snapped him just where you wanted it. Also the way the highway goes through the shot is ideal. I also like your pov and it seems from your note that you worked hard to get there. The sky is great in color and I also like the division of the light and shadowed areas on the ground. Typical "Floydian". You make it look like the horizon. So close yet so far away!

Mel

I remember 10 years ago when I last stoped at this tower by the highway and climbed it. There was a lot of UV haze and it was impossible to have such a clear view that day. However I do have some pictures taken at that place, but with some "old" negative colour film.
Really a typical landscape of the peruvian coast.
In the 80´s this highway --although not specifically this portion-- was nonexistent or in a very bad conervation state. Luckily those times are gone now.
Best regards.
Jürgen

PS. By the way, wasn't this highway destroyed in some parts due to the earthquake of 15.8.2007?

Hi henk
beautifull light and sharpness here. This picture is very well composed with the diagonal. The road and the blue trucks give a beautifull contrasts.

Wonderful photo of the Pan American Highway, your high POV gives us a good view of the highway going all the way up to the horizon, this produces a great depth effect, the shot is very neat and captured with good light giving the chance to see all the amazing details of the valley, the presence of the trucks breaks the calm and solitary environment but it's an excellent add to your composition.

Olá Henk, what a fascinating diagonal of this endless highway. I remember very well this POV, but my photos were a mess, because I couldn't deal with the excessive light of this desert. Of course that you know how to manage that problem. Did you try the flight as well? A crazy ride where only the high concentration of making photos prevent me to throw out...
Anyway, you choose well the two blue trucks to animate the foreground and I love the perpendicular line of the shadow in the background.

No! No! Don't tell me Henk where you were to photography this point of view. Don't tell me that you were on a tower. Don't tell me it was large. No. Tell me that you are able to fly! Or that you are that tall! :)
Tell me that you did made the set-up, so that two blue trucks were passing right there, that you ask for some blue sky too! And that you tried to get rid entirely of any green vegetation (be it in real or in Photoshop!). :)
No?
Then, can I dream a little and imagine to be on that large tower myself and see the beauty of this barren land? Yes? Ah! Thank you, dear Henk!

Maybe not as visually spectucal as your usual, but the subject could probably not be better depicted, the angle does it all, and the blue trucks add a welcome touch of Latin America in a landscape that can easily be in Nevada.

Hello Henk,

Well taken diagonal road shot. Lucky to have two blue cars which go well with the sky and neutral background.

A good timing to post this picture. The question, with rising energy and transportation prices, I wonder whether we will see these long highways in about 10 years from now.

Cheers

Wow! Amazing Photo, I love the sharpness and colours. Also the way the road draws your eye to the mountains is spectacular.

Cheers

Chris
