I’m back with a new series of images from our latest trip to Croatia. Our first stop was the Plitvice Lakes National Park. It is one of the most stunning locations I have seen and the water really is this colour. I promise I have added no saturation!

The Plitvice Lakes National Park covers an area of 115sq miles (300sq km). A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, it was originally founded in 1949. The stunning scenery has been formed over the millennia by the water in the lakes carving out the valley, and depositing sediment of calcium carbonate from the limestone rocks to form the dams and barriers, which separate the lakes and provide terraces for the cascading waterfalls. There are a total of sixteen lakes, all with stunning turquoise water, so clear, that at the edges as you walk, you can see the fish. Wooden walkways allow passage across the lakes and alongside some of the cascades. There is also an electric bus and a boat to transport the visitors, although most places are accessible on foot through beech and oak forest, which provides a habitat for a wide variety of flora.

I thought I would start with a wide view from a high POV, which shows two of the lakes separated by a natural “dam” with water cascading from one lake to the other. I think it is a good visual example of my explanation above.

The place deserves a lot more time than we were able to spend there. It also deserves to be photographed using a tripod, but on a Sunday in June that was not possible. Apparently it was a Public holiday week-end in Italy and the place was crowded with a high percentage of Italian people. In fact there was a danger at times of being pushed off the walkways into the water, so no chance of setting up a tripod. I would love to go back either earlier in spring, or in autumn, when it will probably be quieter. Even though there was plenty of light I was using at least ISO 500 much of the time to allow for a wider DOF at hand-holdable speeds.

Check out the WS to show some of the walkways.

Hi Kath,
Welcome back ! I see you've been travelling again, nice destination and composition here, the water color on the lower lake is absolutely stunning, inviting for a dive indeed (today 30° here in Basel) and we can see nice highlights on the feeding wateralls, I also like the rocky foreground for a good contrast and color patch as well as to anchor my feet ;-)
Have a nice day JY

Hi Kath,
Good to see you back with a new photo and it's a beautiful one. Wonderful view over this National Park with such attractive colours. It's nice how the blue of the water is surrounded the large variety of green hues. The rocks are well included in the foreground. Thanks for sharing, it looks really great!
Regards,
Lars

Hello Kath,
Indeed all the glory of the nature in one composition! The place, the colors, the water and the green invorment in levels are fantastic.
The pure beauty in the nature...I an wonderening about the people and the big companies mainly how they could destroy such a wonderful places...
Excellent work!

Have a nice week,
Thomas

Well well well....look who's here ;-)
Hello Kath,
Seems you've done with the editing.
The place is famous and you show why. The crystal bright water surrounded by a beautiful forrest and a lot of waterfalls, no wonder it's crowded in the summer.
The pov is well chosen with the rocks in the foreground, but also the two lakes devided by the waterfall which we are going to see more in the next uploads.
Very good first entry...
Regards, Henk

Hi Kath,

Hello Kath
Amazing photo of the natural wealth of Croatia.
Great POV, vivid colors and clear atmosphere.

Hi Kath,
I see we can expect a beautiful travelogue from you again. Green colour of the lakes is special, surrounded by other tones of green all over. Those waterfalls coming down on many places around the lower lake is very interesting.
Kari

Hi Kath,

A promising new series on a destination I know nothing about. The numerous waterfalls are just amazing and this first overview allows to have a good idea of this spectacular environment.

The colours are bright and appealing and the fact that we don't see any patch of sky gives the impression that the forest is very dense and infinite.

Welcome back.

Zdravo Kath. It is a beautiful place which I saw in Winter (absolute dream) and in Autumn(another dream).I was actually on the very spot where you took this shot but was not as wise as you , since I took some of the sky, which provided too much glare and spoiled the composition and exposure. Excellent colours and detail and of course wonderful POV. Regards. Klaudio.

Hi Kath
Beautiful nature of Plitvice, well captured - I like the rocks in the bottom. Amazing colors!

Sneza

Hello Kath -

I really like this overview shot as a lead off image because I know we will see more intimate scenes in the coming days. All of the technicals are flawlessly spot on. I think the waterfalls in the middle make the image. Well seen and presented.

Thank you for sharing.

John

Hi, Kath -

About time you showed up again! We missed you.

Considering the crowd of people you describe here, you were lucky to get this shot without any of them in it. And it is a nice shot, foreground and background both crisp, the water as a main diagonal through the whole scene, and good colors. Including the foreground rocks was important - gives us a sense of place.

Best,
Dan

Hi Kath,
Good to see you you back! What an amazing color here! Are these fed from glaciers? I had noticed in the Glacier National park similar shades. How are you finding the D300?

Shaeri

This is such a beautiful place. I love the color of the water!! A very nice pov and excellent lighting. Good to see you back!! TFS and have a great day!

Hi Kath
Ever since I started checking out the photos on TE when my husband joined, I've wanted to go to this place. As all the photos show the emerald green of the water, I believe you. The rocky foreground helps give depth and perspective.
Regards
Nikki

What a nice reminder for me - I was in 1975 here - Thanks !!!

A wonderful view to this landscape. The quality and sharpness are great. Fantastic photo!

Hi Kath,
The WS may be for info only but I just love it!! The walkways lead the eye, and the brightly dressed tourists along the abundant cascades. While the PP has wonderful light and color, the WS presents a unique POV. I suppose you didn't select it because of the high compression. In any case, it looks like a wonderful trip!! I'm looking forward to it!!

Hello Kath,
I like your composition and the colours of the pic.
You added more colours including the rocks and the yellow flowers on the FG.
The two lakes on different levels make this photo also more beautiful.

Hi Kath,
Welcome back.
The beauty of the place is stunning and as usual you captured it wonderfully, choosing the most right POV and framing. What colours! It looks almost tropical! And so many waterfalls...
I guess that all that thick vegetation hides any people that could be on sight, but here the place looks very nicely deserted.

Hi Kath,
Welcome back and what a great shot to start a new series. Wonderful composition with the waterfalls capturing center stage. Very nice sharpness and perfect clarity and colors too. Well done and looking forward to more images from Croatia. TFS. Gerald

oh, so you were in heaven that's why... good to see you around kath:)... not much to say about it... a beautiful shot of a beautiful place... very nice indeed...

Olá Kath, nice to see you back. It's terrible to visit such a beautiful natural place, when it's so full of people - it can totally ruin the mood...I can see that this is gorgeous and it deserves at least a full day from early morning to late afternoon - I see many people walking in WS, but no one bathing, which I imagine it's possible... ISO500 is a surprise for me as it is the excellent quality of the image with all this detailed greenery.

Hi Kath,
The blue&green color of the lake and the green tones of the trees are fantastic:)
Good to see you back with your splendid photos:)

Hello Kath,
I am glad to see you and your photos here again. Welcome.
Your composition is a nice graphical explosion of the nature, very well caught in an elegant setting and from a good POV, which offers us a great perspective and a good depth of image.
The light is great, and the colors are magnificent, I like how the blue tones of the water join a totally green environment, and the detail of the rocks in FG, with a few softer tones.
It is a very beautiful landscape perfectly caught in this good work.
Friendly regads,
Josep

Hi kath,
welcome back
great post you bring from croatia
very great pov nice colours and I really like the landscape of croatia
When i have been there 2 year ago we were in a np called crka or something like that and it looked very similiar to this place
nice shot
Lookind forward to see other from yours.
best regards Toba

Hi,Kqth. I think paradise must look like that (with some mountains in the background of course). The lush vegetation and the water give us a taste of heaven. You did well to include some rocks in the fg to create depth and contrast which is reinforced by the lighter coloured leaves. Interestingly enough there is a small triangle in the bg where the trees also get some sunlight, which gives the impression we get more or less the same colours at both ends of the picture.
Have a nice evening,
Philippe

Hi Kath,
wonderful shot! Great POV with the view down to the waterfall and the inclusion of the stones is very good since it creates a nice depth, I`m looking forward to seeing many more shots of yours coming from your trip to Croatia, thanks for sharing that one!

Take care
Mark

Kath,
Glad you're back !
This compo is wonderful, as you enhanced the water color, which is just amazing.
I like too how the green appears here,
Regards,
JB.

Hello Kath,

I presumed that you had gone on holiday because you had ceased posting shots.

I have a colleague who often goes to Croatia and now, I can understand why!

This is absolutely stunning! The colours are just so beautiful and clear! Your viewpoint, using the rocks as both f/g interest and a frame, was very well chosen. The overlapping, diagonal lines of the steep hills, with their luxuriant greenery, lead the eyes naturally towards the double pools of enticing water! Stunning!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Many thanks for your comments on 'Mobile Homes'. And yes ... I'm counting down! Four weeks but only 10 days!!!!

Hi Kath,
I'm glad you've discovered some of many Croatian gems
and am looking forward to seeing more from your trip!
I myself wanted to go in May but finances didn't allow
me (sob, sob!)
Thanks of reminding me of my motherland!
;-D
Robi
PS. I have to tell you something that it might come as
a surprise to you, but Plitvice lakes are in their best
(photographically speaking) in winter, after a heavy
snowfall when lakes and waterfalls get frozen.
So, if you can plan your next visit at
that time, you gonna be spoiled for choice of photo
opportunities. Just a few examples:

Hi Kath,

Happy to see you again… And here is a new country which fits in your title page !!! Marvellous place which us was also described by our friend Philip on this photograph. I like much your point of view on these succession of water falls. The natural colors are very beautiful. Croatia is really a country to be known. Thank you Kath for the WS too.

With all my friendships and a very good day,

Hello Kath,

Welcome back on TE ! A beautfil vew of Plivitce, a very beautiful place. Good POV and great depth of field for your photo. But I like especialy the colors, this green is superb with very nuances. the green of the vegetation but also the green of the water. the rocks in the Fg arise very well in this green.

Hello Kath
First came to know of this amazing place from the posts of Philip (testmaniac). But for the first time I am seeing the high POV of the entire place. This is truly an amazing place & we can see the various shades of green on display, the icing on the cake being the turquoise of the water. Promises to be a great series..look fwd!

What a wonderful plece this seems to be, Kath. This is the truthfull sign that TE is a place to know about the world.

Kath,
it seems that I missed the great start for your shots of Croatia. I was waiting anxiously for those and here they are - finally. I know, as soon as you're back you first need an extra time to sort and process and only then they get posted at TE. A very different flow technique compared to mine ;-)
A very beautiful view of the two lakes separated by all the green and the rocks providing the multiple waterfalls along the line. The solid rocks in the foreground are a nice add to give us a ground were to stay and look down.
