There are so many more areas of rock formations at Brimham Rocks than can be seen on the over-view from the visitor centre.

Many of the rock formations have been given names and on a narrow path behind the visitor centre the Dancing Bear and the Idol can be found. This shot is of the Druid’s Writing Desk on the edge of the Brimham Plateau overlooking the North Yorkshire countryside. It was probably named by the Victorians who thought the rock shapes were man-made. Geologists studying the rocks have found that this and similar formations were formed by sandblasting when fierce winds blew from the ice caps during the Ice Age.

Hi Kath,
It does look like a desk with flat slanted surface. These rocks with varying forms seem to provide endless photo opportunities. A good place worth for another visit, maybe with autumn colours.
Kari

Hello Kath,
A perfect to point of view to show us why this rock is so-called. Very appealing light producing good natural colours. Excellent clarity.

Hi, Kath. A good composition with the rocks in the foreground leding to the Druid's Writing Desk. The rock formation stands well out against the sky. The tree on the left and the bushes on the right close the composition well.
Have a nice day,
Philippe

The composition is well taken, the atmosphere is good. Beautiful rocky countryside, a stone like a "T". Well done.
Best wishes,

Must have been a mighty great druid! :–) Excellent shot, well balanced and with great colors.

Hi Kath,
I always wondered how they choose the names for these kind of rock formations... Maybe they ask contemporary sculptors to do that, as sometimes these rocks seem to have been sculpted by men, but their forms tend to be too abstract to go along with the names they give them. But they are also, sooo irresistibly photogenic!... And even give great photos like this to owners of D300!
I already knew this formation from a book given to me by a friend of a friend of Uderzo. :D It's where the British friends of Panoramix gathered!
Regards, José.

Hi Kath,
In addition to your always lovely color, I especially like the way the tree balances the rock formation and the way you managed to show the top of the 'desk.' Your note is very informative, I've never heard of the winds sandblasting these formations - yet it makes perfect sense.

Hola Kath.
Another interesting rock formation, your POV produces a nice view with the rock and the tree producing a good balance, the rock itself has a great balance and really looks like a writing desk. Very well captured.
Well done.
Best wishes.

Hello Kath
These rock formations at Brimham Rocks must be a treat for geologists. Well framed, with good balance built between the Druid's Writing Desk & the tree. Liked the Dancing bear rock in the WS as well. Interesting place & a good set of pictures!
Best Regards
Angshu

Hello Kath,

A most compelling shot of the Druid's Writing Desk, a bit reminiscent of the stand-up desk that Thomas Jefferson used (he evidently had a bad back and was more comfortable standing upright). Your note is engaging as always. I have not seen many areas in the UK where rocks are seen precipitously balanced on columns. The fairy chimneys in Capadoccia in Turkey and Zion National Park in the western United States are a pair of sites of seen such formations.

Warm regards,

Bulent
