The Heddal stave church is a wood structure build around 1200 AC - and the largest of these churches still existing. Enjoy the legend:

THE LEGEND ABOUT HOW HEDDAL STAVECHURCH WAS BUILT

Once upon a time five of the farmers in Heddal agreed upon building a church in the vally. One of them, named Raud Rygi, one day ran into a stranger who promised to build the church for them. But on one condition ; When the church was finished, Raud had either to bring him the sun and the moon, the blood of his heart or guess the strangers name. Raud thought it would bee more than enough time to discover the man's name, and so he made the deal.

But alas, he didn't get very much time. During the first night all the timber was in place, the second night the tower was raised, and the third day the church would be finished. Fearing for his life, Raud strolled along his fields desperately wondering how to guess the strangers name. Then he heard the most beautiful song coming from inside the nearby mountain :

"Hush, hush, little baby do -
tomorrow father, Finn, will bring to you,
moon and sun and Christian heart
as toy for you, so nice and smart".

The riddle was solved ! The builder was the "troll" Finn, who lived in the nearby mountain. That's how Raud saved his life and Heddal got its church. But the troll couldn't stand the sound of the churchbells every Sunday, and therefore moved with all his family to another mountain.

A norwegian piece of history, very well spotted, lighted and put in scene. Excellent note.

I'd like to have it a bit more sharp, to could examine the many many peaces of wood it is built of.
But I knew about your "love" to a tripod...

Fascinating building Jack - and a well composed shot against this great blue sky. Interesting note too.

Hi Jack, it is a ery nice church and your photo is nice too, sharp and with very clean colors.

Good architecture.I like the colors and the contrast between them.Good framing and composition.Good note.

Superbe, j'adore cette église (j'en ai même fait une reproduction en dessin à l'encre de chine ...)
Les détails sont bien rendus et les couleurs aussi avec les teintes d'Automne. La note est intéressante.
Merci pour le partage.

Yes this is a very good one from you Jack,
I really like the way you took it, the lines are good the depth is there, and the colours are great. Fantastic job

A wonderful composition you have here Jack. A good combination of the colors of the sky, church and the trees. Architecture itself is beautiful and this pic reflects it very well.
Good job and very touching note. Thanks for sharing...

Absolutly adorable! place and building... Interessant, diferent and mysterious!
TE spirit is all here ;)))
Well done and seen. Thanks for sharing.
Spoony.

Beautiful church, it has the colors of autumn. It seems so much bond to nature which show the same colors. Well seen and good composed shot.

It's incredible that a building in wood could have the age of the castles of the medieval period . the the wood have special treatment alone the history to protect it , ( like tar ) . but I presume thne cold climat of the montain of Norvay help for wood long life

A quite unique construction for a church this is, Jack - when one would think the roofline should appear, there is another diagonal twist that makes it reach up even higher. I like a lot the color hues in the wood, and the positioning behind the stone wall. Even though far away from the main subject, that small red house at the right is another small detail I really enjoy. Well done, and thanks for sharing the legend, a delightful piece of Norwegian folklore.

This building is very strange and you shooted it very well. You make me think I should take a photo of "Jean de Nivelles" (in the city where I live) and share this other legend...

I'm not so sure about the house on the right though.

Fantastic building, well integrated into the image. I would be curious to see a close-up of it from a different angle. The sharpness could be just a bit better, probably the tripod from the car would have helped.

Very nice story! :-)

The building is simply fabulous and it's amazing hte age of it considering the material it was built.

Nice colors and details, although I miss some more brightness.

Very beautiful chuch, the colour and contrast i splendid, good light in excellent compoced photo.

Joili cadrage. Les couleurs sont saturées juste ce qu'il faut. C'est magnifique.

It's a fantastic church. Very original architecture. I wonder how it looks on its front view but the rear view is nice. I also appreciate the legend.

Great shot...brings back 30 year old memories...thanks! I never knew the legend...

Very nice shot. I also like the position of the church and such a blue sky in the background. You have a very good eye for composition

Hi Jack, what an incredibly beautiful church....
superb architecture...good POV, colors and light...well done..TFS..
Marilyn

Oh how nice to see that church in the summer. This is a very nice picture of such a special church. I have actually been there twice but always in the winter and unfortunately it was always closed. Hopefully I will be able to go there again one day and find an open door. Actually in the winter I find it looks much darker - almost black. When did you take this one?

Thanks for the legend. It makes this beautiful old church all the more interesting. I love the deep blue of the sky that sets off this wonderful wooden structure nicely. I like the low vantage point you have taken to better show off this ancient structure.

Hi Jack, your photo is this morning in "featured destination", TE's 1st page : I've always been really intrigued by this beautiful structure and what you tell us is interesting. I wonder if the inside of the building is as exotic as the outside...
Beautiful shot,
Compliments,
Cath.
